Buying a watch

Finding your watch

One of the great pleasures of watch collecting is finding the right piece — whether it’s your first mechanical watch or the next addition to a growing collection. From discovering something you didn’t know you were looking for, to upgrading, replacing or tracking down a hard‑to‑find favourite, our aim is to make buying from Second Hand Watch Collective as simple, enjoyable and reassuring as possible.

Every watch on our site is carefully sourced, checked, verified and accurately described — so whether you’re brand new to owning mechanical watches or already deep in the hobby, you can buy with confidence.

Buy from us

Here’s what we focus on:

  • Your watch, your way: Whatever combination you prefer — head‑only, your choice of strap, or a bracelet upgrade — we will work with you to get the watch exactly how you want it;

  • Authenticity guaranteed: Every watch is checked, verified and prepared by us. If something isn’t right, it doesn’t go on the site;

  • Accurately described: We describe each piece exactly as we see it, with clear, high‑resolution photography that highlights both the strengths and any honest signs of wear. What you see is exactly what arrives on your wrist;

  • Trusted: Whilst SHWC is a relatively new development, we’re well‑known on the Christopher Ward Forum (ttf23) and across the CW Facebook groups, with long‑standing positive references you can check any time. We’re extremely proud of our excellent (Ward Hoard) Trustpilot feedback and 100% positive eBay reviews, built over many years of transparent, reliable service;

  • Warranty: Each watch comes with a minimum six month mechanical warranty from us, with some having the remainder of the original manufacturer warranty;

  • Returns and buy-back scheme: Not quite clicking? Send it back. Want to trade or sell later? We’ll happily buy it back or part‑exchange;

  • Reservations: If you’d like us to hold a watch for a short time, that’s no problem, we’re happy to reserve items for a week or two. There’s no deposit required - all we ask is that you keep us informed. If your plans change, just let us know so we can release it back for sale.

Why Second Hand Watch Collective

Second Hand Watch Collective exists to identify great watches you might not yet have come across but absolutely should have done. Our focus is on independent and microbrand watches where design, engineering and value matter more than marketing or status.

Expect to see brands with character and capability, pieces with genuine strengths and often a little something special going on beneath the surface. Think more Pinion, Elliot Brown or Halios and less Breitling, Omega or Rolex.These are watches chosen on merit, not reputation.

If you are specifically looking for pre-loved Christopher Ward watches, our sister site, Ward Hoard, remains our dedicated CW‑only home, offering depth, choice and specialist knowledge.

Condition

Condition is one of the most important factors when buying a pre‑owned watch, but it’s also one of the most subjective. One person’s “mint” isn’t another’s. At SHWC, we grade conservatively and consistently, based on our view of visible wear and overall presentation. Every listing includes macro photographs that highlight any identified flaws. Our condition scale comprises:

  • Nearly New: Worn once or twice at most. No visible marks. Could pass for new.

  • Excellent: Light, careful use only. Minor hairlines may be present. No dents or damage.

  • Very Good: Clearly worn but well cared for. Light marks visible on close inspection.

  • Good: Regular wear evident. Cosmetic marks visible and priced accordingly.

  • Fair: Heavy wear with noticeable cosmetic issues.

Shipping

We ship quickly and securely worldwide, using Royal Mail Special Delivery for UK orders and mainly UPS for international shipments. Full details here.

Usual delivery time for watches is 1 to 2 days (UK) and 3 to 5 days (USA and worldwide).

Watches to the USA can be sent either duty paid in advance (at 10% plus £8.50 UPS admin fee) or duty unpaid.

Part exchange

Part‑exchange is a practical, low‑hassle way to move from one watch to another. It means you don’t need to sell your watch first, avoid the cash outlay of buying outright, and skip the risk and effort that come with private sales.

If you’d like to fund your purchase from another piece in your collection, please take a look at the Selling section — the process is the same, with the added benefit that the credit goes straight towards your next watch.

Independent and micro brand watches are where we stretch our legs. We look for originality, capability and the small details that set one piece apart from another.

We care deeply about the watches we offer and the people who buy them. Whether you’re exploring beyond the familiar or narrowing in on something specific, we’re always happy to help.
