Description
Newmark is one of the lesser-known names associated with British military watchmaking. During the 1960s and 1970s the company supplied watches to the Ministry of Defence, earning a place alongside a small group of manufacturers whose watches were built to military specifications rather than civilian fashion trends.
The modern Newmark 52 takes its inspiration from those original General Service watches. The formula is simple and largely unchanged: clear Arabic numerals, fixed bars, compact proportions and a dial designed to be read quickly in any conditions. There is very little here that doesn't serve a purpose.
What makes this version particularly appealing is the gilt detailing. Against the black dial it adds a welcome bit of warmth and character without compromising the military aesthetic. It's a subtle touch, but enough to stop the watch feeling like a straight reissue. The result sits somewhere between a military watch and a vintage field watch.
Power comes from a modern quartz movement with a smooth sweeping seconds hand, giving much of the visual appeal of a mechanical watch while retaining the accuracy, durability and convenience that made quartz such a natural fit for military use. Like the best military watches, it's straightforward, functional and easy to live with.
It's a remarkably honest watch. No heritage theatre, no unnecessary complications and no attempt to reinvent a design that got most things right the first time around.
