Description
Cabot Watch Company is a British brand founded in 1972 and best known for producing watches supplied directly to the UK Ministry of Defence. Unlike brands that imitate military styling, CWC has genuine issued provenance, having supplied watches to the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and British Army for decades. Their designs are governed by specification and function rather than fashion.
The GS Sonar takes a slightly different route from the better-known G10 and SBS models. Rather than drawing inspiration from a military wristwatch, it traces its roots back to one of CWC's specialist stopwatches. Over the years CWC produced thousands of these timing instruments for a variety of applications, from Royal Navy submarine operations to broadcast timing at the BBC and ITV. The Sonar adapts that stopwatch dial for wristwatch use, resulting in something that feels uniquely CWC whilst still remaining entirely functional.
The white dial is effectively a miniature version of the original stopwatch face, while the distinctive red screw-down crown pays tribute to the red stopwatch pusher from which it takes its inspiration. The result is a watch that stands out immediately without relying on gimmicks or unnecessary complications. Like the best military designs, every unusual detail has a reason for being there.
Power comes from a reliable Swiss quartz movement housed in a robust stainless-steel case with sapphire crystal and screw-down crown. It remains a practical everyday watch first and foremost, but one with a story that sets it apart from the majority of military-inspired watches.
