Description
If you’ve not come across Mr Jones Watches, they have their own distinctive style!
A Perfectly Useless Afternoon was designed by Belgian illustrator Kristof Devos, it takes an everyday object and turns it into something playful, whimsical and entirely unconcerned with the conventions of traditional watchmaking.
The dial depicts a figure drifting lazily in a swimming pool, serving as a gentle reminder that not every moment needs to be productive. Time spent doing very little can be just as valuable as time spent doing something (at least that’s what I tell myself). That sentiment sits at the heart of the watch and explains why it has become one of Mr Jones' most recognisable designs.
Practicality is very much a secondary consideration. The reclining figure's outstretched leg indicates the hour, while a tiny yellow duck circles the dial to show the minutes. It works well enough once you understand it, but nobody would mistake it for a precision instrument. Reading the time takes a moment, which is rather the point.
Like many of the best Mr Jones designs, A Perfectly Useless Afternoon is charming, distinctive and a great deal of fun. As a tool for telling the time it's fairly hopeless, but as a reminder to slow down occasionally, it's surprisingly effective.
