Description
Squale dates back to 1959, when Charles von Büren began producing professional dive watch cases in Switzerland. The name Squale, meaning shark, and the now familiar shark logo have long been associated with purpose‑built dive watches rather than lifestyle pieces. In the 1960s Squale developed a 1000m dive watch using a crystal mounted on flexible seals, removing the need for a helium escape valve. Around this time the brand also began supplying watches to a number of armed forces and professional diving units, building its reputation through real use rather than marketing.
The 1521 is the core Squale design. Everything about it is simple and functional: clean dial, large markers and a case shape that hasn’t really changed because it didn’t need to. It wears well, sits flat and doesn’t do anything unnecessary. That’s a big part of the appeal.
Inside is the Sellita SW200, which is exactly what you want here. Proven, easy to live with and keeps good time without fuss. The 500m rating is more than most will ever need, but it reinforces the point that this is built as a tool first.
