Description
BOLDR is one of those brands that doesn’t lean on history because it doesn’t have any. Instead, it focuses on making solid, practical watches that cover a lot of ground without getting too clever about it. The Odyssey Freediver GMT is probably the most ambitious thing they’ve done.
It’s a proper dive watch at 44mm, with a 300m rating, ceramic bezel and a case that has a bit more detail to it than most watches at this level. It’s a big watch and you know you’re wearing it, but it’s put together well. What makes it interesting is the movement. It uses the Miyota 9075, which is a true GMT, not the usual caller setup you get at this price. That means the hour hand jumps independently, which is actually useful if you travel, and not something you expect in a watch under a grand.
The dial is where they’ve tried to do something different. It’s a layered design with a slightly translucent centre, which gives it a bit more depth than a standard flat dial. It won’t be for everyone, but it does make it stand out from the usual dive watch crowd.
Overall, it’s an interesting watch. It’s got a genuinely strong movement and decent build quality. It isn’t up to the standards of Monta, Halios or Tudor, but offers tremendous value for money.
