Description
Seiko doesn’t need much introduction, but certain models sit above the rest of the range, and the Sumo is one of them. It’s been around for years in different forms and is generally seen as the point where Seiko divers start to feel more substantial and better finished.
This version is the SPB431J1 “Silfra”, a limited edition of 2,000 pieces for Europe. The name comes from the Silfra fissure in Iceland, which explains the dial — it’s not just another colour variant. This is where the watch stands out. The dial is gorgeous - it has a textured, almost organic look that shifts with the light, giving it a lot more depth than the standard Sumo models. It’s not loud, but it’s definitely not flat either.
It also picks up a few upgrades over older Sumo executions. The bezel is ceramic rather than aluminium and the case uses Seiko’s harder coating, which should hold up better over time. The case itself is still the familiar Sumo shape, which means it wears better than the numbers suggest, but it is still a large watch and you know it’s there.
Power comes from the Seiko 6R35 automatic movement. It’s widely used across the Prospex line and is chosen for reliability rather than anything exotic. With 200m water resistance it remains a proper dive watch, even if most will never get near the water.
This is a Sumo at its core, just one of the more interesting versions.
