Description
Pinion is one of the more interesting names in British independent watchmaking and a firm favourite of mine, having had several of their models over the years in my own collection (including a couple now). Founded by designer Piers Berry, the brand has built its reputation on small-batch production, practical design and a hands-on approach that sees each watch assembled and tested in England.
This watch comes from the Pinion Sample Series, a collection of hand-painted dials created during the development of a future watch line. Five colourways were produced with the intention of selecting a handful for wider production, but the project ultimately moved in a different direction. By mid-2024, Pinion's focus had shifted towards electroplated, no-date dials, which would go on to form the basis of the Reaxis collection.
Rather than leaving the original prototypes unseen, Pinion released the Sample Series as a special edition in its own right, with just five watches produced in each colour. This green version is therefore one of only five examples made, giving it a particular level of rarity.
Beyond the dial, everything is classic Pinion. The 42mm case is robust without feeling oversized, the design is clean and highly legible (befitting Piers’ background as a designer) and the proven Swiss automatic movement delivers reliable everyday performance.
It's an unusual opportunity to own a watch that is afascinating piece of Pinion's history.
