Description
Fortis has been producing watches since 1912 and built much of its modern reputation through its association with aviation and spaceflight. While many brands talk about tool watches, Fortis has generally concentrated on making them. The Aeromaster emerged during the brand's mid-2010s overhaul, when the catalogue was simplified and refocused around clear themes rather than an overwhelming number of overlapping models.
The Aeromaster is essentially Fortis's take on the modern pilot's chronograph. Based on the long-running B-42 platform, it combines a straightforward instrument-style dial with the robustness expected of a professional tool watch. The design is clean and highly legible, with large luminous markers, sword hands and the familiar Valjoux 7750 layout. At 42mm and around 15mm thick, it has plenty of wrist presence, but the all-brushed case and uncluttered styling stop it feeling unnecessarily flashy.
Inside is the ETA/Valjoux 7750, arguably one of the most proven automatic chronograph movements ever made. Reliable, easy to service and capable of taking a huge amount of abuse, it is exactly the sort of movement you'd expect to find in a watch designed with function firmly in mind. Combined with 200 metres of water resistance, a sapphire crystal and genuinely useful everyday legibility, the Aeromaster reinforces the impression that Fortis prioritised practicality over marketing. That's a large part of its appeal.
