Description
Marathon is best known for producing watches built to military specifications rather than for the enthusiast market. Founded in 1939 and still family owned, the Canadian company has supplied watches to armed forces, government agencies and professional users for decades. While many military-inspired watches merely borrow the aesthetic, Marathon's reputation is built on producing genuine issued equipment designed to function in demanding environments.
The OSAR-D, short for Original Search and Rescue Diver, is one of the brand's most recognisable models. Developed for professional search-and-rescue use, it combines a highly legible dial, substantial case construction and exceptional durability. At 41mm in diameter and equipped with a tall sapphire crystal and oversized crown, the OSAR-D has an undeniably purposeful appearance. Every element of the design prioritises function over ornament, resulting in a watch that feels closer to a piece of professional equipment than a conventional sports watch.
The dial is clean and easy to read in all conditions. Large hour markers, broad hands and Marathon's trademark self-illuminating tritium gas tubes provide constant low-light visibility without requiring exposure to a light source. The bezel is equally robust, with deep knurling and positive action designed to remain usable while wearing gloves.
Power comes from a Swiss automatic movement, housed within a case rated to 300 metres of water resistance. Combined with its tritium illumination, screw-down crown and heavy-duty construction, the OSAR-D remains one of the most distinctive modern tool watches available. It is unapologetically utilitarian, but that focus on function is precisely what has earned it such a loyal following among military watch enthusiasts.
