Description
Halios is a Canadian brand and possibly my favourite brand other than Christopher Ward. I certainly have more Halios in my own collection than any other. Jason Lim started the brand in Vancouver, and the name Halios comes from the Greek halios, meaning “of the sea”, which neatly sums up both the focus and character of the brand. From the outset, Jason’s watches were unapologetically functional, stripped back and engineered with intent. Early pieces like the Holotype, Bluering and Laguna built a strong following by doing the fundamentals exceptionally well, but it was the Puck that really differentiated Halios from the pack.
The original Puck was not Halios’ first watch, but it was the one that announced the brand had no interest in playing it safe. When the Puck II arrived, it stayed true to that idea while refining it. Still lugless, still cylindrical and still unapologetic in its intent, the Puck II kept the visual drama of the original but softened the edges just enough to make it more liveable. At 48mm across with a thick, slab‑sided profile, it still looks ridiculous on paper and completely logical in the flesh. The lack of lugs remains the key design choice. It turns what should be an unwearable monster into something that sits flatter and more securely than expected, hugging the wrist rather than spreading across it. This is not an accident. The Puck II, like its predecessor, is designed around how it wears, not how it measures.
What really sets the Puck II apart, and why people continue to wax lyrical about the Puck lineage years later, is that it never pretends to be anything else. It is not trying to be a vintage homage, it is not chasing versatility and it is certainly not designed for universal appeal. It is a bold, modern tool diver that grabs attention and leans into its own identity. In SHWC terms, the Puck II earns its place because it represents independent watchmaking and what is possible in that genre. It is polarising, purposeful and completely comfortable in its own skin. You either get it straight away or you do not, and if you do, very few other watches quite scratch the same itch.
