Description
Marloe Watch Company is a British brand founded in 2015 by Oliver Goffe and Gordon Fraser originally based in Marlow Buckinghamshire and now assembling watches in‑house in Oxfordshire. Both founders came from creative design backgrounds rather than traditional horology but shared a frustration with modern watches that looked premium on the outside and felt hollow once opened. Marloe’s signature is “Time Well Spent”, a motto that underpins the brand’s approach to watchmaking.
The Solent collection takes its name from the stretch of water between mainland England and the Isle of Wight with inspiration drawn from British maritime history and the achievements of solo sailor Alec Rose. The original Solent launched in 2019 and quickly became a core model for the brand. The Solent Timer builds directly on that foundation and represents the most technically involved version of the design to date. It is Marloe’s first dual‑crown watch incorporating an internal rotating timing bezel while retaining the bold case architecture that defined the original.
For me, the Solent holds a place close to my heart. Growing up on the south coast of the UK and windsurfing at the various hotspots, even occasionally venturing across to the Isle of Wight powered only by the wind, this was very much my old stomping ground. Anyone who knows that stretch of water will recognise its character immediately. Changeable, demanding and uncompromising and one of the busiest waterways in the world.
At 42mm the Solent Timer has clear wrist presence but careful proportions keep it wearable. The second crown at 2 o’clock operates the internal bezel allowing timing functionality without the risk of accidental knocks. This is a practical solution for a watch intended to be worn on or around the water rather than a styling flourish. The case is fully polished giving the watch a crisp confident appearance that plays well against the colourful chapter ring.
Power comes from the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement. This is a deliberate choice prioritising reliability thinness and long‑term serviceability over brand signalling. The movement beats at 28,800 bph offers hacking and hand winding and has a strong reputation for robustness. An exhibition caseback reveals the movement and carries the inscription “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor” - a quote from President Roosevelt reinforcing the maritime theme.

The watch is in very good condition with visible but light signs of wear. The polished surface does tend to pick up light micro scratches. There is also a minor imperfection in the chapter ring by 57.
